How-To: Prevent Burnout (Part Two)
May 27, 2025Hello everyone, I'm Joel Duncan with Therapist Consultants. Today let's talk about part two of preventing burnout in your practice. Next, get help at work and at home. Now burnout doesn't just come from seeing too many clients, it comes from handling everything else on your own. If you're overwhelmed with administrative work, hire a virtual assistant, a billing specialist, or a receptionist, even part-time. Or maybe there's someone in your family who can help. That's what I did. 30 years ago, when I started my practice, my mother had just retired and she helped me answer phones and bill insurances. I wouldn't be where I am today without that help. Now we employ multiple employees to help run our practice and mom is so proud. Don't forget about your home life. If you're spending hours mowing the lawn or cleaning the house, think about outsourcing those tasks. One therapist we work with refused to hire a lawn service because he wanted to save money, but he charged 200 bucks an hour. Your time is valuable, spend it wisely. Next, let go of clients who drain you. Not all clients are the right fit for you. Some are resistant, argumentative, or consistently cancel. Let's be honest, 80% of your stress comes from 20% of your patients. A therapist once told me the best day of their life was a day they realized they could fire patients who weren't a good fit. You don't need to take on every single case, especially if certain patients take an unfair emotional toll. Your peace of mind matters too, and that matters to the rest of your patients. Next, prioritize self-care and mental health support. Therapists often tell clients to engage in self-care, but do you practice what you preach? Self-care isn't just a trendy buzzword, it's essential for longevity in this field. Some strategies for you include exercise, mindfulness and meditation, therapist support groups, and find your own therapist. Every therapist should have their own therapist. Remember, avoiding burnout isn't just about you, it's about your patients. When you're exhausted, you can't serve clients effectively. Preventing burnout is not selfish, it's necessary for maintaining a thriving practice. So if you're a therapist and consultants client, review your schedule and your burnout prevention strategies with your consultant and make sure you're running your practice effectively. If you're not yet a client, now is the perfect time to join us. No matter where you find yourself, today is the perfect time to start seeing growth and therapist consultants gives you a complete customizable roadmap to success. from startup to retirement.
