Offering Group Sessions

Apr 08, 2024

Hi, this is Dave Kats with Therapist Consultants, and I have a tip for you right now. One of the hot things in the therapy practice is doing a group session. Once you get a group session, it tends to go on forever and ever and ever. In other words, you have a lot of meetings that you can help people with and make more money at the same time.

Now, if you have, let's say, eight people in and you charge just $50 for a session, that's already $400 an hour that you're making and you're helping eight people more than if they weren't there. So how do you do a group session? Well, first of all, pick a hot topic in your practice. If you're doing a lot of marriage counseling, you might do a group session that's entitled "How to Make a Good Marriage."

Then the next thing you need to look at is your niche. If you have a particular niche that you want to promote, then start advertising that on Facebook. Start putting posters up around your area. Make sure that you get started doing group sessions in your niche, because that will help build your niche.

The third thing you have to think about doing for a group session is think about advertising on Facebook and on your website. If you advertise on Facebook, you'll get a certain number of people that aren't your patients that probably will become your patients. And then make sure you're promoted in the schools and in the churches if it's appropriate.

And last, I would suggest that you do this. Use your patients that you have right now to form the nucleus of your support group. You see, the biggest problem we have is what if we have a support group and nobody shows up? What if we have a group session and nobody shows up? Well, here's the problem. If you have that, it feels like it was a bust. It feels like it didn't work very well, but if you have your patients there as your base group, then the rest of the people will make it look like a full house and you'll have a good group session.
